Biography

Dr. Alan Barnard is one of the leading decision scientists and experts in Theory of Constraints (TOC) in the World. He worked directly with Dr. Eli Goldratt, creator of Theory of Constraints, for almost 20 years helping organizations from both the private and public sector implement Theory of Constraints to achieve more, with less, in less time. Today, Alan is the CEO of Goldratt Research Labs (USA) whose primary focus is on how to use the latest advanced technologies and advances in decision sciences to develop Apps and Decision Support methods to help individuals and management teams in organizations make better, faster decisions. As CEO of Goldratt Research Labs, Alan has lead joint innovation labs and joint research projects with Fortune 500 companies like Microsoft, Cargill, BHP, Tata Steel, Amazon, Random House Publishing, ABB as well as with public sector organizations like Utah Governor’s Office, UN WFP, Habitat for Humanity and others. Alan also serves as an advisory board member of BHP’s Science & Innovation Council, Throughput Inc. and World Women Conference & Award organization. Alan is a past-President of the South African Supply Chain Society SAPICS (1995-1997), past-President of TOCICO (2003 to 2005). Alan’s contribution to the fields of Decision Science and Theory of Constraints has been recognized by his inclusion to the 2020 Marquis Who’s Who Global Listing, Forbes Technology Council Membership and the TOCICO Lifetime achievement award. Alan graduated from WITS in 1991 with a BSc Industrial Engineering (Cum Laude) degree and in 2009, Alan was awarded a PhD in 2009 in the field of Management of Technology & Innovation by the Da Vinci Institute with a thesis titled “How to identify and unlock inherent potential within organizations and individuals”. Alan is a frequent presenter on Decision Making in a Complex World and Theory of Constraints at international conferences. He has also published a number of articles on this topic and is the author of “Impossible … unless?”, as well as contributing author of two chapters in the 2010, McGraw Hill published, Theory of Constraints Handbook. Alan is currently completing his 2nd book called “The Bottleneck – How to resolve our attention crisis.” Alan is the chief architect of the award-winning HARMONY Decision Maker, Change Simulator and Change Maker series of Decision Support Apps.
